Risks of Invasive Pneumococcal Disease on Children with Asthma

The American Academy of Pediatrics published an article online in January of 2020 looking at the risks of invasive pneumococcal disease on children with asthma, particularly after the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines. Researchers searched through four electronic databases and found five articles that fit the study. The found “Children with asthma had 90% higher odds of” invasive pneumococcal disease and had higher rates of pneumonia than the control groups. The researchers concluded that despite pneumococcal conjugate vaccines “children with asthma continue to have a higher risk” than children without asthma.
