Study Finds Combustion Related Nitrogen Dioxide Pollution Acts as an Important Contributor to Pediatric Asthma Incidences

In the January 2022 edition of The Lancet, an article examines the concentration of nitrogen dioxide air pollution and its associations with pediatric asthma incidence. Researchers used a nitrogen dioxide concentration dataset that monitors information from 58 countries and compared the concentrations “with population and baseline asthma rates.” They found that “combustion-related” nitrogen dioxide pollution “continues to be an important contributor to” pediatric “asthma incidence globally, particularly in cities.” They suggest that mitigating such air pollution needs to be a key element of public health strategies for children.
