AIRE Children’s Study Finds Children Living Near Salton Sea Have High Prevalence of Asthma and Other Respiratory Conditions 

An article published in Pediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology’s March 2024 edition details the Children’s Assessing Imperial Valley Respiratory Health and the Environment (AIRE) study, which is studying the impacts of the drying Salton Sea on children. Researchers collected baseline information on 731 children and did yearly or twice-yearly follow ups. They found a high prevalence of allergies, bronchitic symptoms and wheezing, as well as an asthma diagnosis in 24% of the children.
