In The Journal of Pediatrics’ January 2020 edition, an article examines how maternal preexisting type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes mellitus impact childhood asthma. The study consisted of 3119 children exposed to type 2 diabetes and 9836 to gestational diabetes mellitus. The researchers concluded that “the risk of childhood asthma was predominately observed for exposure to preexisting type 2 diabetes, small for gestational diabetes mellitus requiring medication, and not increased for gestational diabetes mellitus not requiring medication.”
