BMC Pulmonary Medicine’s July 2018 edition includes a systematic review examining “the effect of early life vitamin D status on asthma and wheeze later in life.” The researchers included three randomized controlled trials and 33 cohort studies in their analysis. The study concludes the “studies show no association between antenatal blood vitamin D level and asthma/wheeze in later life,” but notes “antenatal vitamin D intake may have an effect on childhood asthma > 5 years or childhood wheeze.” Based on the inconsistent findings, the researchers suggest further trials to better understand the results.
