Effects of Vitamin D on Asthma Symptoms in Obese Urban Children

The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology included in article in its February 2019 edition examining the effects of Vitamin D on asthma symptoms in obese, urban children. Researchers had a cohort of 120 children aged 5 to 12 that “were evaluated at baseline and every 3 months for 9 months.” At each interval, indoor air pollution, vitamin D, and asthma symptoms were measured. The researchers found that “among obese urban children with asthma, low individual” vitamin D “enhanced adverse respiratory effects associated with indoor” air pollution. Vitamin D was also protective against asthma symptoms in high fine particulate air pollution environments.
