A comment in the June 2019 edition of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine examines ultrafine particles, which are currently not addressed by air quality regulations. The researchers note these sized particles can have greater toxic effects than larger molecules due to a number of factors, including “chemical composition, deeper lung penetration, and enhanced oxidative capacity and ability to translocate to the systemic circulation.” The article reviews the content of another article, “Spatiotemporal Variations in Ambient Ultrafine Particles and the Incidence of Childhood Asthma,” in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
