The Indian Journal of Pharmacology’s April 2017 edition included a study evaluating the impacts of educational interventions on the use of metered-dose inhalers (MDI) by patients. To conduct the study, researchers assigned 100 patients into two groups, one which was “taught the use of MDI by demonstration of the technique” and the other “educated about the technique by a pictorial leaflet.” They then followed up with the patients after 15 days and “assessed for correct technique for use of the MDI.” The researchers found “the average steps correctly followed by the patients” improved significantly after being taught, with 85.11% of those taught by demonstration and 49.06% of those taught by leaflet performing the essential steps of using MDI correctly. They conclude “educational interventions… help ensure a better use of the MDI.”
