The Asian Pacific Journal of Allergy and Immunology contains an article in its March 2020 edition aiming “to write a narrative review of the epidemiology of air pollution-related respiratory-related allergic disorders… and the effects of air pollutants – with an emphasis on the particulate matter – on respiratory allergy-related health.” Researchers used PubMed Medline to find representative epidemiologic and controlled-exposure studies and found methodologic heterogeneity, which “affected measures of association between studies.” The researchers conclude that “particulate matter exposure can exacerbate pre-existing asthma and may contribute to developing asthma, allergic rhinitis, and aeroallergen sensitizations.”
