A 2019 study in Pediatric Allergy, Immunology, and Pulmonology examines the knowledge of public-school teachers as it relates to “asthma self-carry and self-administration laws and policies and trainings received related to general chronic health conditions including asthma.” Researchers collected data from 593 teachers. Teachers reported “little training received at either undergraduate or graduate levels.” Some teachers noted they had some knowledge about asthma from “in-service training or to a lesser degree formal education,” but most had received no asthma-related training.
The researchers suggest education about asthma has not increased, and emphasized the need to examine the “implications for school teachers, school administrators, school nurses, teacher educators, and asthma education personnel.”
