Study Investigates Relationship Between Lung Microbiota and Asthma

A study in the October 2018 edition of Pediatric Pulmonology examines the relationship between lung microbiota and asthma. Among some factors that may affect asthma, the “lung microbiome composition changes due to a disruption of the delicate balance between immigration and elimination of bacteria,” and “can interact with the immune system, thus influencing inflammation.” Antibiotics and early viral infections also alter the composition of the lung microbiome. The researchers note that there is more research to do, and “potential effects of probiotics and prebiotics on lung microbiome are unknown.”
